South Coast
16 Feb - An afternoon visit to the south coast after a morning at work, in lovely weather for the camera. There was the usual good selection of waders at Langstone and Hayling - Grey Plovers, Black- and Bar-tailed Godwits, Curlew Ringed Plover and Dunlin, Turnstone and Sanderling - Church Norton also held a nice flock of 100+ Knot. Surprisingly, I couldn't find any Avocets at Farlington. Large numbers of Brent Geese (2) were feeding and flying, and there were several pairs of Red-breasted Mergansers offshore. There was a Slavonian Grebe and 3 Common Scoters off the beach from Church Norton, and at least 8 Black-necked Grebes and a Little Egret (3) off Hayling Island Oyster beds (1). The highlight here was my fix of my favourite gull - at least 12 Mediterranean Gulls, mostly in smart summer plumage (4-7) and starting to display in the Black-headed Gull colony. The day ended with a wonderful sunset.
