Northumberland - Roseate Terns, Seabirds galore......and 2 Spoonbills

11 June - En route to a boat trip to Coquet Island, Cresswell Pond and Druridge Pools produced 2 smart adult Spoonbills, 6 Avocets and a singing Grasshopper Warbler - while off the dunes the sea gave many fishing Terns, Auks and 2 passing Manx Shearwaters. The boat trip was fairly choppy with cloud and a passing shower, but we had excellent views of c10 Roseate Terns in full breeding plumage (2-4) complete with pinkish flush on the underparts and dark bills, both at the colony and in flight. Also here - Sandwich (5-6), Arctic (9-10) and Common Terns (7-8), many Puffins (11-12) together with a few Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes (14) and Fulmars. Marauding Great Black-backed Gulls patrolled the colony (13). Amble harbour gave very close views of Eiders with young (15,16). An excellent follow on to the WT Robin yesterday. All bird photos JM.
