Glos Winter Birding
4 Feb - A fine morning, very cold ( -8 at dawn) and progressively clouding over with a breeze developing. A total of 17 Hawfinches (1) seen early morning - at Brierley and Speech House in the Forest of Dean - plenty of Siskins around, and several Crossbills (3) flew over New Fancy View, where 2 Goshawks (2) displayed briefly. A Dipper (4) and a Grey Wagtail were at Wenchford. At Crickley Hill near Birdlip, 50+ Bramblings (5-9) were with 100+ Chaffinches in the beechwoods. The CWP was mostly frozen, but a quick look on the way home gave a total of 33 Goosander on the few patches of open water. Snow arrived after I got home....photos JM, the Hawfinch was taken at Speech House last year.
The previous day, a total of 3 Red Kites were seen (in Wilts) en route between Swindon and Hungerford - 1 at Ogbourne St George and 2 at Froxfield.
