Smew Influx

9 Feb - An influx of Smew to the CWP in the current cold snap, with 10 seen today - 2 drakes and 5 redheads on pit 29, and a drake and 2 redheads on pit 30. The drakes are incredibly smart birds, and they are generally very wary. They've presumably come across from wintering grounds in the Netherlands due to the freeze up. Also seen today - 18 Goosander, many Wigeon and Gadwall, 65+ Red-crested Pochard on pit 74 and a Chiffchaff along the river by pit 57. A pair of Goldeneye also on pit 57. I managed some Smew photos as they flew then came in close to the bank on pit 29. Very cold and cloudy today, about freezing point, with snowfall this evening.
